Can someone help me explain the steps when you are balancing chemical equations?

My tips:
1. Write out the # of atoms for each element on either side of the equation
2. Leave O & H last (I don't remember why)
3. Balance the elements that appear to be the simplest (a.k.a. appears in one side of the equation the least) by adding a coefficient/# in front of the molecule. Multiply that number to all elements in the molecule and change the counts accordingly
4. Continue until the numbers of atoms on both sides are equal

Excuse my bad explanation.
Here's a good website (1st ex.) https://www.wikihow.com/Balance-Chemical-Equations
