What's is the downside of skipping the essay portion of the SAT

Some colleges will only accept a SAT score if you took the essay portion as well. The same applies to the ACT.

I think there's no downside to NOT skipping the essay. In other words, writing the essay should not "hurt" you in any way. Colleges typically refer to your supplemental essays to gauge your writing abilities, not the essay score on the SAT/ACT. So it's not the end of the world if your score is average.

The downside is that the colleges do not get a measure of how you can write (an important college skill). Doing the SAT with Essay demonstrates your writing skills. Many colleges require the essay portion of the SAT.

If you do poorly it won't hurt too much. An average essay score is fine.
